'IMPRESSIONS'

Often we use impressions- whether of people, places, or experiences- as building blocks to construct new ideas and meaning. Filtered through our own imaginations, interpretations, and memories, they retain an elusive quality. This collection aims to reflect the shifting nature of impressions while simultaneously preserving what feels fleeting.

Created in a set of diptychs, each pairing represents a collision of elements: light, color, movement, form, and texture. The photographs capture a scene from an outside viewpoint. Light and color illuminate the inside of the frame, depicting a level of intimacy and mystery. As one photographed impression gives way to a memory or feeling, the corresponding painting explores these resonances through layered washes. Working with unsized canvas, I allow the medium to bleed and leave a “stain” on the canvas. Colors fade into the fabric and add depth through each new layer. In these paintings, I attempt to capture each photograph’s impression as it filters through my memory. The result is not an exact rendering of a moment, but rather an exploration of what is evoked in the act of remembering.

This collection is inspired from my recent trip to Japan in February 2023.
